The Robstown Cotton Pickers fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in district play Friday night when they lost 42-33 to the Mathis Pirates Friday night. The loss puts the Pickers in fourth place in district 31-3A.
The Pirates took the lead in the middle of the first quarter with a one-yard run by Justin Moreno, but failed to make the extra-point kick.
Mathis scored again with 2:16 left in the quarter on a 23-yard touchdown run by running back Donnie Butler. Pirates quarterback Edward Alvarado connected on the two-point conversion pass to Gabriel Alvarado, giving Mathis a 14-0 led by the end of the first quarter.
Robstown's first score came with 6:47 left in the first half on a 27-yard field goal by Jesus Guerrero, but the Pirates answered back with another touchdown run by Butler.
Mathis opened the second half with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Alvarado to receiver Rashad Washington. After the successful extra-point kick by Michael Martinez, the Pirates had a 28-3 advantage with 9:26 left in the third quarter.
The Cotton Pickers scored a few minutes later on a 6-yard pass from Randy Flores to receiver Marty Gutierrez and successfully converted for two points on a run by Joe Mungia following the play. However, Mathis was able to score on a 63-yard touchdown run by Butler on the subsequent play, giving the Pirates a 35-11 lead by the end of the quarter.
Flores managed another touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, this time to receiver Joseph Gaona, with Mungia once again successful on the two-point conversion run. Once again, the Pirates answered back with a touchdown. Alvarado connected with Washington for an 81-yard pass, giving Mathis a 42-19 lead with only nine minutes remaining in the game.
Robstown was able to score two more times in the game, both on short-yard runs by Flores, but it wasn't enough to give the Cotton Pickers a victory.
Robstown had 450 yards total offense for the game, with 274 yards passing. Flores went 11-21 for 179 yards and two touchdowns as well as 67 yards and two touchdowns rushing on 10 carries.
Mathis managed to get 401 yards total offense, with 233 yards rushing on 40 carries. The win puts the Pirates in third place in their district just above the Cotton Pickers but below Sinton (8-0; 5-0) and Ingleside (7-1; 4-1).
This week, Robstown will travel to Falfurrias to take on the 0-8 Bulls. Their final game for the season will be at home next week against the Ingleside Mustangs. Kickoff for both games is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
