Robstown and Giddings are playing in a best-of-three regional semifinal playoff series, which begins Thursday. Game 1 is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Texas State University in San Marcos. Game 2 is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Texas State University. If needed, Game 3 will follow 30 minutes later.
The Cotton Pickers advanced by blowing past the Mathis Pirates, 13-2, in a one-game playoff game.
The one-game format seemed to be working in Mathis' favor. They led Robstown, 2-1, after the top of the third inning. The Cotton Pickers took over in the bottom half of the inning by bombing the Pirates for 12 runs. The game was called because of the 10-run mercy rule after four and a half innings.
Mathis was never able to get too much going offensively because of the pitching of Michael Velasquez.
Through five innings of work, Velasquez struck out 13 batters. He scattered four hits and surrendered two runs.
Robstown totaled nine hits and 10 RBIs.
Matt Vasquez went 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
Alex Marroquin went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs.Velasquez was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Brandon Garza was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Ricky Gonzalez, Randy Flores and Brandon Elizondo each had a hit.
The winner of the Robstown-Giddings match-up will face either Boerne or Needville in the Region IV finals for a invitation to the Class 3A state championship.

Calallen used a fast start to secure the win early. The Wildcats scored five in the first and six in the second. They scored a pair of runs between the fourth and fifth innings before padding their lead with three runs in the sixth.
