The Texas Sports Writer’s Association recently named 13 local athletes to their All-State Baseball and Softball selections.

Robstown high school had five players named in baseball and one in softball, while Calallen had six baseball players honored.

Laura Benavides was the only softball player to receive honors. She was named Honorable Mention catcher for class 3A. Earlier this year she signed her letter of intent to play for St. Mary’s University.

Robstown baseball had first baseman Michael Velasquez and outfielder Alex Marroquin named to the 3A first team. Both were also named first team selections by the Texas Coaches poll last month.

Also representing Robstown were pitcher Randy Flores on the third team, pitcher and shortstop Trey Leal along with third baseman Brandon Elizondo, were selected as an honorable mention.

Leading the way for Calallen was junior Wyatt Mathisen, coming in as first team shortstop and honorable mention pitcher. He has verbally committed to the University of Texas at Austin.

Joining Mathisen on the first team were junior pitcher Armando Arrevelo and sophomore outfielder Preston Dorsey.

Calallen first basemen Tanner Vandevere was named to the third team, while outfielder Tyler Neslony and catcher Chad Vanaman were named honorable mention.
