The Banquete Bulldogs traveled to Hebbronville Friday night and beat the Longhorns, 21-16.
It was the Bulldogs' second straight district win, leaving them undefeated in district play this season.
The Bulldogs had a balanced attack of rushing and passing, totalling 209 yards.
In the first quarter, A Bulldog fumble was recovered, Abraham Ramirez scored for the Longhorns on a three-yard run. The extra point was blocked, giving Hebbronville the lead, 0-6.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the second quarter, though, when Chisholm Wright rushed three yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was no good, tying the score 6-6 at the half.
In the third quarter, running back Jacob Gonzalez punched it in from two yards out, and Victor Montemayor kicked the extra point, giving the Bulldogs the lead, 13-6.
Ramirez again scored for the Longhorns in the fourth quarter, on a 22-yard run. He also ran in the two-point conversion, swinging the lead back to Hebbronville, 13-14.
The Bulldogs put together a successful drive down the field, finally scoring on a 25 yard pass from Ben Benavides to A.J. Chapa. Wright ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead.
The Longhorns mounted a drive of their own, but the Bulldogs' defense held firm and stopped them seven yards short of a touchdown. Backed against their own endzone, the Bulldog offense was unable to move the ball, and the Longhorns scored on a safety, bringing the score to 21-16, Banquete.
With time running out, Adrian Rios intercepted a Longhorn pass, cementing the victory for the Bulldogs.
Following the game, Banquete Head Coach Kevin Hermes praised his team's play.
"Again tonight it was a big team effort," Hermes said. "We knew going into Hebbronville it would be a hard-fought game. They are well coached, and you can always expect a battle anytime you play them."
Leading rushers for the Bulldogs were Wright, with 40 yards; Gonzalez, with 37 yards and Josh Riojas, with 24 yards. Benavides passed for 127 yards in the victory.
Banquete will play their homecoming game at home this Friday against Kingsville Academy. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
