The Calallen Wildcats debuted as western Nueces County's highest-rated team on the Harris Ratings for Zero Week.

The Wildcats, who were 8-4 last year and 6-1 in District 31-4A, have a power rating of 217 in Class 4A and are No. 18 in the state. The Wildcats were the 31-4A runner-up last season and a playoff team.

The Harris Ratings are a weekly Texas high school football power rating. They will appear weekly in the Nueces County Record Star.

Calallen returns a handful of offensive starters, but do bring back some key returnees like receiver Hunter Whetsel. The Wildcats will have a new quarterback in Tanner Sparks.

Also in Class 4A, the Tuloso-Midway Warriors are ranked 150. They begin the season with a power rating of 185.

The Warriors made school history last year by finishing the District 31-4A race in fourth place and getting into the state playoffs for the first time since 1966. The Warriors were 6-5 last season.

Tuloso-Midway opens the season Friday on the road against Raymondville.

The Warriors have amix of returning experience and some new faces. Starting at quarterback is Eric Alvarez, who started for the Warriors last year. The team also brings back receiver Ryan Wilcox.

The Robstown Cotton Pickers are ranked No. 101 in Class 3A with a rating of 182. The highest-rated area 3A team is Sinton, Robstown's District 31-3A rival.

The Cotton Pickers are coming off their first playoff campaign since 1966.

They were 5-6 last year and are bringing back a bulk of talent, including six starters on offense and seven on defense.
