Even without Ryan Duke, Sean Hoelscher and Steven Vidaurri, the Calallen Wildcat baseball team is off to a solid start after sweeping the McAllen tournament over the weekend.
The Wildcats were 6-0, maintaining their status as the No. 1 team in 4A.
They won the title Saturday after being the Edinburg Runnin' Bobcats, 19-3.
Senior pitcher Logan Verrett pitched a complete game, striking out nine batters.
Patrick Frasier went 3-for-4 against the Bobcats, including 3 RBIs.
Other teams that the Wildcats beat in the tournament included Brownsville Riviera, PSJA North, and Rio Grande City.
The Wildcats began their season Feb. 19 with a 4-0 win against the Sinton Pirates.
Verrett was the starter and struck out 11 batters and gave up just three hits.
Calallen heads to another tournament this weekend at Boerne High School before hosting its own tournament the weekend of March 6-8.
The Wildcats are the defending champions who beat the Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers. They will attempt to win their tournament for the 10th straight time.
