The Banquete Bulldogs clinched a spot in the state playoffs Friday by beating the Premont Cowboys, 21-7.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs struck first on a 41-yard touchdown run by Manuel Garcia.

Eric Flores' extra point kick was good, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

Later in the second quarter, Ben Benavides threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end Justin Garza.

Flores again kicked the extra point, making the score 14-0 at halftime.

After another scoreless frame in the third quarter, Jacob Gonzalez scored in the fourth quarter by running in a touchdown from 19 yards out.

Flores' extra point kick made the score 21-0, Bulldogs.

The Cowboys finally reached the endzone with less than a minute to go in the game, when Bryan Ramirez connected with Chris Ruiz on a four-yard touchdown pass.

Shane Chapa kicked in the extra point, giving a final score of 21-7.

Benavides led the Bulldogs in passing, completing five of eight passes for 73 yards and one touchdown.

D.J. Harris completed four of eight passes for 23 yards.

Manuel Garcia led the Bulldogs in rushing, carrying six times for 79 yards.

Josh Riojas had seven carries for 37 yards. Benavides carried the ball eight times for 21 yards, while Jacob Gonzalez ground out 16 yards on 10 carries.

Chris Ruiz had seven carries for 43 yards for the Cowboys. He also completed eight of 20 passes for 84 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

All three of those interceptions went to the Bulldogs' Manuel Garcia.

Justin Garza's one catch for 38 yards and a touchdown was good enough to lead all receivers.

A.J. Chapa had three catches for 35 yards, and Josh Riojas had three receptions for 23 yards.

For the Cowboys, Shane Chapa had two receptions for 37 yards, and Bryan Ramirez caught two passes for 10 yards and a touchdown.

Following the game, Banquete head coach Kevin Hermes praised his team for making the playoffs.

"Getting to the state playoffs was a goal for us. It feels good, and I'm proud of our kids," Hermes said. "They have worked hard since Aug. 2."

The Bulldogs play the No. 1-ranked Refugio Bobcats in Banquete Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs have a 5-1 district record, while the Bobcats are undefeated at 6-0.
