After having a mediocre start to its season, the Tuloso-Midway Warriors have found their stride in district, losing only once to the Calallen Wildcats.

With Calallen losing to the Flour Bluff Hornets, the Warriors beat the Alice Coyotes Friday, 69-58, to fall into a three-way tie with the Wildcats and the Hornets for the lead in District 31-4A.

Although the Coyotes did score seven 3-pointers, it was not enough to overcome the offense of Tuloso-Midway.

It was a tight battle at first with Alice holding its own against the Warriors, 18-14, after the first quarter.

The Coyotes began to fade a little as they faced a nine-point defecit, 36-27, at the half.

Tuloso-Midway slowed down a bit, but managed to stay ahead after the third quarter, despite scoring only eight points.

The Warriors were up 44-37. Both teams scored almost at will in the fourth quarter, but it was Tuloso-Midway who still had some extra firepower for the win.

Unlike the boys team, the Tuloso-Midway Cherokees began the season almost unbeatable, but district play has been a bit bumpy for the girls' team.

The Cherokees struggled against the Alice Lady Coyotes early in the game, scoring only seven points in the first quarter.

Tuloso-Midway was down 12-7 heading into the second quarter.

Led by Kensi Terrell, the Cherokees began a run in the second quarter that put them back in the game.

Outscoring Alice 16-10, Tuloso-Midway found itself with a slight one-point lead over the Lady Coyotes, 23-22.

The second half was not kind to Alice as they struggled in making baskets, scoring six points in the third quarter.

The Cherokees took advantage and increased their lead to eight, 36-28. It was enough for Tuloso-Midway to hold on to the win as Alice was not able to catch up.

Like the boys' team, the Cherokees were also in a three-way tie for the District 31-4A lead with the Calallen Lady Wildcats and the Flour Bluff Lady Hornets. All three teams possessed a district record of 5-2 after Friday's games.

The Warriors, Wildcats and Hornets were at 4-1.

Both Tuloso-Midway teams played the H.M. King Brahmas Tueday night at Kingsville.

Earlier in district, the Warriors and Cherokees lost to Calallen. They will get their chance for revenge as they face them Friday night at the Tuloso-Midway gym.

The girls will begin at around 6:30 p.m., with the guys playing immediately after at 8.
