The Corpus Christi Hammerheads had to wait an extra week to find out which team they would play Saturday night in the Intense Football League Semifinals at the Central Pavilion Arena.

The No. 3 seeded CenTex Barracudas crushed the sixth-seeded Alaska Wild, 71-18, Saturday in the quarterfinals, advancing to play the Hammerheads.

Both teams split two games in the regular season with the Barracudas winning 70-60 in their first meeting June 9 at the Expo Center and Corpus Christi winning the next game 70-54 at home.

The Hammerheads are trying to get to the Intense Bowl for the third straight year.

They lost their first two trips in the championship against the Odessa Roughnecks in 2006 and the Louisiana Swashbucklers last year.

This is the second time CenTex and Corpus Christi will meet in the semifinals, with the Hammerheads winning 66-49 two years ago.

The Odessa Roughnecks won the other quarterfinal match 67-33 against the Frisco Thunder. The win gives the Roughnecks their third straight semifinal meeting against the Swashbucklers.

In the previous two meetings, the Roughnecks beat Louisiana the first time, 53-50, which led them to an Intense Bowl Championship after beating the Hammerheads, 97-56.

Last year, Odessa had a shot at another title, but a fourth-quarter comeback from the Swashbucklers ended a potential upset, with Louisiana winning, 43-40.

Although Corpus Christi finished this season with a solid 10-4 record, the team has had another great home season, going 6-1.

The Hammerheads were riding a 12-game regular season win streak at home before the Swashbucklers beat them 41-32 in Corpus Christi's final game of the regular season on June 28.

On paper, Corpus Christi is second in the league in scoring offense with 57.7 points a game. The Barracudas are close with 53.3 points.

Hammerhead quarterback Dustin Almond is second in touchdowns thrown with 57. CenTex quarterback James Brown is sixth with 41.

Unfortunately for Almond, he also leads the league with the most interceptions with 22.

Brown has thrown the least with 10.

On paper is one thing, but these two hope to put on a show at 6:05 p.m. Saturday with the winner getting a berth to Intense Bowl IV.
