The Banquete Bulldogs won their fourth straight game Friday in their closest victory yet in a 24-17 win over the Hebbronville Longhorns.
It took a fourth quarter effort from tailback Jacob Harris to score the winning touchdown as the Bulldogs moved to 2-0 in District 32-2A play.
On paper, the teams were evenly matched productively with the Longhorns producing 288 yards offensively and the Bulldogs with 282 offensive yards. All of Banquete's yards were produced on the ground.
The difference maker came in the form of Hebbronville's three lost fumbles.
Harris rushed 19 times for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns.
He scored his first touchdown in the first quarter on a 16-yard run, giving the Bulldogs a slight 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Banquete would extend its lead, 14-0, after Steven Karabanoff ran it in for a touchdown from 24-yards away.
Hebbronville running back Joseph Maldonado rushed for 176 yards with two touchdowns on 30 carries.
He put the Longhorns back in the game after scoring a 28-yard touchdown run, with Banquete still ahead, 14-7.
The Bulldogs increased their lead as the first half was coming to a close when kicker Matthew Rodriguez connected for a long 48-yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs a comfortable 17-7 lead heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Maldonado scored his second touchdown, sneaking in the end zone from a mere two yards away.
Later in the third quarter, the Longhorns had possession of the ball as they drove it to the Banquete 11-yard line.
Kicker C.J. Garza succeeded in making a 28-yard field goal, tying the game up heading into the fourth quarter, before Harris scored his winning touchdown for Banquete.
With the win, Banquete moved to 4-1 overall.
Next for the Bulldogs are the Premont Cowboys, who are coming off a win against the Riviera Seahawks Friday.
The game will be played at Premont High School Friday night at 7:30.
