Dustin Almond had his best night of the season Saturday by completing 26 of 46 passes for 304 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Hammerheads needed that kind of performance from the Intense Football League's 2007 Offensive Player of the Year to beat the scrappy Fairbanks (Alaska) Grizzlies in a touchdown-fill 63-51 contest.

The Grizzlies (1-4) never went away, and managed to trade scores with the unbeaten Hammerheads (3-0) for most of the night in the Central Pavilion Arena. Late in the fourth quarter, they nearly stole the game from Corpus Christi. Trailing 56-39, the Grizzlies scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Bo Bartick to Joshua Sooter and again on a 50-yard interception return by Phillip Wilson to cut the Hammerhead's lead to 56-51.

Corpus Christi put the game away with 1:54 left to play when back-up running back Fred Wallace bulldozed his way into the end zone from five yards out.

It was the only rushing touchdown for Corpus Christi. The score was setup by a clutch 20-yard catch by lineman Matt Ross. It was Ross' only catch of the night, but it was a big one.

Almond put the Hammerheads up early with a five-yard touchdown pass to Schulyer Anderson and a 12-yard scoring pass to Johnny Anderson.

After the Grizzlies answered with a four-yard touchdown run by Bartick, Almond hit Ed Giddings for a 29-yard score.

The three Hammerhead receivers were busy for most of the night. Giddings had the most yardage with 100 yards and two touchdowns off of five catches.

Schulyer Anderson had 11 catches for 93 yards and two scores and Johnny Anderson had three catches for 27 yards and one touchdown.

But it was Nathaniel Dunn, playing in his first game of the season after being signed earlier in the week, who led the team in touchdown catches with three.

He and Almond hooked up for touchdown passes of nine, 24 and five yards. He finished the game with four catches for 48 yards.

Defensive back Wali Mumin, also picked up earlier in the week, had a big game for Corpus Christi. Aside from several bone-jarring and crowd-pleasing hits, he had the team's only interception of the game.

Bartick finished the night completing 21 of 35 passes for 194 yards and five touchdowns for the Grizzlies. He also rushed for two.

Solomon Jones led his team in receiving with seven catches for 83 yards.

Anthony Parks had nine receptions for 74 yards. Both receivers had a pair of touchdown catches.

The Hammerheads will play in their first road game of the season Sunday against the Frisco Thunder.
