ODESSA - With back-up quarterback Cory Miles leading the way, the Corpus Christi Hammerheads exploded for the team's biggest first-half output of the season Saturday night.

Miles threw for five touchdown passes in the first two quarters of the game to help the Hammerheads secure their second victory of the season. Corpus Christi improved to 2-4 with the 42-31 win over the Roughnecks in the Ector County Coliseum.

The Hammerheads will be on the road again Saturday when they travel to Abilene for a rematch against the Ruff Riders and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter.

Miles, who started for only the second time this season, began the game by leading a quick four-play scoring drive capped off by a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathaniel Dunn. Later in the first quarter, he connected with Toric Goins for a seven-yard scoring strike.

Odessa answered with a field goal to begin the second quarter and seemed to finally get its offense on track, but Miles wasn't bothered. He went on to complete touchdown passes of 11 and 24 yards to Goins. He also connected with Austin Willis for a 45-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.

Miles finished the game with a season-best 194 yards passing. He completed 15 of 22 attempts and threw only one interception.

Corpus Christi's offense slowed in the second half, but its defense picked up the slack and surrendered only 14 second-half points.

The Hammerheads did score in the fourth quarter on a five-yard run by running back Redford Borel.

Goin's three touchdown catches was a season-best for him. He ended the night leading the team in receiving with six catches for 78 yards. Willis also had a season-best five catches for 73 yards. Dunn had three catches for 49.

A week earlier in the Central Pavilion Arena in Robstown, Odessa defeated Corpus Christi, 47-44, for their first victory of the year.
