Allison Leija’s decision to transfer turned out to be a good one.
The former Robstown softball player left the Cotton Pickers for John Paul II last season and helped lead the Centurions to the TAPPS Class 4A state tournament for the first time in school history. John Paul lost to Fort Worth Southwest Christian 6-4 in the semifinals, but returns every player from a team that finished 26-2.
An All-TAPPS 3-4A first-team selection, Leija earned a spot on the all-tournament team at state after blasting a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning against Southwest Christian that brought the Centurions to within three runs. She also received honorable mention on the TAPPS 4A all-state team.
Leija first picked up a softball when she was 4 years old and started piling up the accolades at Robstown. She was named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman and Defensive Player of the Year the following season.
