Banquete quarterback Ben Benavides passed for 205 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 18 yards and another score to help the Bulldogs overcome four fumbles and four interceptions in a 29-18 victory over Robstown on Friday.
The senior signal caller, who missed last week’s win against John Paul II, opened the scoring with a 1-yard run with 7 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first quarter. The Cotton Pickers answered exactly a minute later with a 9-yard touchdown strike from Riley Ramos to Raul Gaitan that cut the deficit to 7-6.
The Bulldogs (3-0 overall) picked up two points off a safety early in the second quarter and built a 15-6 halftime lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Jacob Gonzalez.
The first of Benavides’ two scoring passes happened less than a minute into the second half when he found Manuel Garcia open for a 54-yard touchdown. He then connected with O.J. Ramirez on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.
Robstown (0-3) scored twice in the fourth quarter, the first touchdown an 11-yard pass from Luis Rodriguez to Jason Mungia. Rodriguez also scored on a 19-yard run.
Rodriguez completed 10 passes for 164 yards and also led the team with 42 yards on the ground.
