Banquete didn’t seem to show any rust after last week’s bye in a 35-0 triumph over Taft in Friday night’s District 16-2A Division II opener. The Bulldogs (1-0) improved to 4-0 overall, while the Greyhounds (0-1) dropped to 1-3.
Banquete quarterback Ben Benavides went 10 of 19 for 161 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried 13 times for 58 yards.
Running back Arnold Bueno led the team on the ground with 66 yards on two carries, one of those a 66-yard touchdown run for the game’s first points. Jacob Gonzalez added 36 yards on 12 carries to go along with two catches – both touchdowns – for 40 yards.
The scoring strikes from Benavides to Gonzalez covered 25 and 15 yards. Ryan Ocanas hauled in a 37-yard touchdown catch on his only reception.
The Banquete defense chipped in with a 20-yard interception return by Randy Gonzalez, one of three picks by the Bulldogs. Banquete held Taft to only nine first downs and 154 total yards.
