San Diego Red, white and blue roses along with a wreath were presented at the VFW district gathering during a memorial service Saturday.

The VFW district meeting was held in San Diego's VFW hall Saturday. The meeting consisted of a memorial service to honor veterans who have passed away.

San Diego Mayor Pro-tem Juan A. Perez welcomed everyone.

"The post are our front lines," said Dan West, guest and candidate for state Jr. vice commander. "If there wasn't a VFW, who would put out the flags."

After the meeting, several fundraisers and raffles took place to raise money for the VFW fund to assist veterans and their families. A hat contest also took place, each adorned with poppies, a symbol associated with veterans.

Posts that participated included San Diego, Alice, Falfurrias, Corpus Christi, Kingsville and Robstown.
