The Nueces County 4-H program held their annual Canning & Yeast Bread Show on Saturday, October 20, 2012, with over 100 entrees from 38 4-H members. The categories consisted of: Salsas, Pickled Vegetables, Relishes, Vegetables, Fruit, Soft Spreads, Basic Breads, Sweet Breads, and Savory Breads. Many generous volunteers judged the entrees on taste, texture, presentation, and appearance. The overall winner for the canned good category was Camryn Haines with her Strawberry Balsamic Black Pepper Jam and the overall winner for the breads category was Jayna Grove with her Cloverleaf Dinner Rolls.
The Canning & Yeast Bread show is only one of the many activities of the 4-H Food & Nutrition Program that the youth can participate in. The objectives of the program are to provide opportunities for participants to exhibit their knowledge and skill when preparing a food project, promote teamwork, provide leadership opportunities, and give members the opportunity to participate in an exciting competitive event.
