The Tuloso-Midway Warrior soccer team took first place in the Silver Bracket of the Alice Soccer Kickoff Classic over the weekend, shutting out Corpus Christi Miller 3-0 in the championship match.
After a scoreless first half, the Warriors were able to break through in the final half for the victory.
“In the second half we made some adjustments,” T-M coach Gabriel Alvarado said. “With the adjusments we made, we were able to put three in. It was more of learning how to attack based on what they were giving us.”
The win gave the Warriors a 4-1 record at the tournament, the team’s first regular season action of the year.
“I was pleased,” Alvarado said of his team’s performance. “We had four wins, so that’s pretty good for any tournament. Compared to what we were doing in scrimmages, we vastly improved, so I was real happy with it.”
While T-M’s strong finish at the tournament was nice, Alvarado is still focused on what matters most – district competition.
“At this particular point, it’s about getting ready for district,” he said.
The Warriors still have plenty to work on despite the strong start.
“Mostly switches, defensive and offensive switches,” Alvarado said of what T-M needs to improve. “Just getting people in the right spots to do the right things, we really need to work on that. We also need to work on clearing the ball. Our first touch needs a lot of work – a lot of fundamental stuff we got to work on.”
