The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District reports they have confirmation of a fifth flu related death in Nueces County.

The latest flu related death was confirmed Monday. The individual was a female between the ages of 70 to 80 years of age. The patient was admitted to a local hospital two weeks ago and had a history of diabetes.

The fourth death in the county was described as a morbidly obese male between the ages of 30 to 40. The patient was pronounced dead at a local hospital last week. Dr. William Burgin of the CC-NCPHD said everyone needs to protect themselves against the flu by getting a vaccination, and keeping their distance from others as much as possible.

The Center for Disease Control recommends antiviral medications for treatment of seasonal influenza. Residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures, such as staying home to keep others from getting sick, avoiding contact with sick people, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough and washing your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol based hand rub.
