With his brother, father and mother watching, 4-year-old Robert Bennett enthusiastically accepts the gavel from Nueces County Court at Law #5 Judge Brent Chesney in what has become a court tradition, where the adopted child gets to tap the gavel, officially finalizing their adoption and closing their case. “With this adoption day event being a summer consummation, these children will have the best back to school story to tell this fall, as they celebrated the birth of their forever family, and we encourage anyone considering fostering or adopting to look into starting the process, as we have many wonderful children seeking a forever family” says Rose Banda, Supervisor of the Nueces County Adoption Preparation Unit.
During Thursday’s Nueces County Adoption Day Judge Chesney presided over the adoption of 15 children into nine forever families.
Currently there are 58 children in Nueces County who are legally free for adoption and more than 6,400 statewide.
If you are interested in becoming an adoptive parent, a public information meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 22, starting at 6 p.m. at the Owen R. Hopkins Public Library at 3202 McKinzie Road in Corpus Christi.
