Ernest Matthew Morales of SSCM Boy ScoutTroop 289 was awarded the Eagle Scout rank at his Court of Honor ceremony on Aug. 6.
Matthew has been involved in scouting since the first grade joining Cub Scouts as a Tiger in 2001. He continued through the scouting program to achieve the highest rank in Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light. He then joined Boy Scouts in 2006 where he continued his journey to Eagle.
After completing all the ranks and merit badges required to move onto the next phase in scouting...becoming an Eagle...he had to learn and plan a service project.
Matthews project benefited Special Olympics SOTX Area 2 which consisted of building award podiums with ramps to use at their award ceremonies throughout the years. He worked together with Scott Rasmussen and Alice Garza and received approval of his plans. He scheduled a car wash fundraiser where he raised a total of $975 and together with his scouts, leaders, and friends, he was able to lead the project and provided three brand new award podiums on April 6 in time for opening day of the Special Olympics Spring Games.
Matthew is the son of Patricia Chavez Morales and Ernest Morales of Corpus Christi. His grandparents are Tomas and Lupe Chavez (formerly of Robstown). Matthew is a 2013 graduate of Mary Carroll High School and recipient of the 2013 Dr. Hector P. Garcia Scholar awarded by the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Founding Chapter of the American G.I. Forum of Texas. He will be attending Texas A&M — Corpus Christi in the field of study of Physical Therapy.
