Calallen (5-0) continued their winning streak with Friday night's game against Port Lavaca Calhoun. In what some billed as a game that would decide the District 30-4A champion, the Wildcats ran away with it.
The Wildcats dominated immediately in the first quarter when No. 10, Derek Scheible scored first, soon followed by No. 32, Robert Maldonado, with only 16 seconds left in the opening quarter. Calallen ended the first quarter with a comfortable lead at 14-0.
During the second quarter Calallen truly caught on fire, scoring four touchdowns in powerhouse plays by Sheible, Maldonado and No. 23, Tristan Crossland. Leaving the Sandcrabs behind in a dizzying daze, the Wildcats ended the half in blowout territory at 41-0.
Showing no signs of slowing down after an exquisite show of unstoppable power in the first half, Calallen scored again when Wildcat Chase Whetsel made a 35-yard run. After No. 9, Joseph Cantu made the kick, the Wildcats held Calhoun at bay for the rest of the third and fourth quarters, winning the game 48-0.
Calallen will have a bye week before continuing the district slate. The Wildcats are next set to come up against Tuloso-Midway on Friday, Oct. 11 at Warrior Stadium.
