Nine area American Red Cross volunteers were deployed to assist in recovery efforts in response to the Southwest Texas floods on Monday. The volunteers from the Coastal Bend-Texas Chapter left early Monday morning to help set up shelters, deliver warm meals and assess the damage the floods left behind.

The nine Red Cross volunteers, who have trained throughout the year in services based on each of their skills and interests, are Margaret Paton, Larry Paton, Tom Scales, Loni Maughan, James Butcher, Shirley Ives, Sheila Johnson, Colleen Hackman and Burt Hankins.

The volunteers traveled to Crystal City, Texas to join the recovery process that is already underway in Southwest Texas.

Red Cross warns that recovery is in its early stages though, as access to some communities is difficult due to elevated flood waters and damaged roads. As the flooded areas re-open, Red Cross will assess the damage and support the recovery effort in the area.

Citizens are encouraged to help in any way they can. Donations can be made to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief, or people can become volunteers and train for future responses.
