The John Paul II Centurions boys basketball team earned the championship title at the San Diego tournament this past weekend.

JPII took out Rio Grande City 76-48 in the championship game after overcoming a small deficit early. The Centurions trailed by one after the opening quarter, but pulled away with a couple of strong quarters.

JPII outscored the Rattlers 48-17 in the second and third periods combined, creating the advantage it needed.

Jaylon Lister, who had a game-high 27 points in the title contest, was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Marcus Williams was named Outstanding Offensive Player.

The Centurions went undefeated in the competition, defeating Robstown, Santa Gertrudis Academy, and Alice as well.
