The Defending State Champions are at it again! The Calallen Powerlifting Team traveled to Port Lavaca on Saturday, January 11, 2014 to compete at the first Powerlifting Meet of the year. The varsity boys team, who won the Division 1 state championship last year, won 1st place team and took home several individual awards and school records.†

The varsity boysí individual placing includes:

In the 132 weight class, Jacob De La Paz took 1st place with a total of 1,075 pounds and tied a school record with a 440 pound Deadlift, and was awarded outstanding lifter of the meet. Aaron Martinez won 3rd place with a total of 955 pounds, and Chantz Mickens won 4th place with a total of 930 pounds.

In the 148 weight class, JD Savanich, who competed in his first powerlifting meet, took 2nd place in his class with a total of 1,065 pounds.

In the 165 weight class, Jarod Garcia took 1st place with a total of 1,250 pounds and freshman Gabriel Cantu took 5th place with a total of 1,055 pounds.

In the 220 weight class, Blade Bronstad won 1st place with a total weight of 1,510 pounds.

In the 242 weight class, Dakotta Cooksy-Hale won 1st place with a total weight of 1,630 pounds, broke a school record with a 405 pound bench press, and was awarded outstanding lifter of the meet.

In the 275 weight class, newcomer Nathaniel Caskie won 4th place with a total weight of 1,115 pounds.

Aside from the varsity boys winning the meet at Calhoun HS, the varsity girls team also left their mark by taking 2nd place. Their individual placing include:

In the 114 weight class, Kendall Bronstad won 2nd place with a total of 535 pounds and Madelene Garcia won 3rd place with 470 pounds.

In the 123 weight class, Talissa Soto won 3rd place and Whitney Westermann won 4th place with 615 and 530 pounds respectively.

In the 148 weight class, Clariss Garcia took 2nd place with a total of 740 pounds, Crytal Collins won 3rd place with 580 pounds, and freshman Savana Statler won 4th place with 525 pounds.

In the 220 weight class, newcomer Savanna Valenzuela won 1st place with a total of 605 pounds.
