In the wake of the tragic vehicle accident that left six-year-old Greg Martinez dead on Saturday, Feb. 15, the community has rallied to support the family, raising nearly enough money to cover funeral costs.

The tragic accident took place on Devon Drive as children were playing in a driveway near a neighbor's Ford F-150 pickup truck. The neighbor, a 31-year-old man, along with his 26-year-old male passenger, were backing out of the driveway, when they felt the front passenger-side wheel run over something.

When the men got out of the pickup truck to investigate, they discovered six-year-old Greg Martinez had fallen underneath the truck and was run over. Martinez was taken to the hospital by ambulance, but did not survive his injuries.

The driver was not cited or charged for the accident, according to Police.

In the days following the accident, the family held a fundraiser at Huertas Tamales, at Staples and Carroll Ln, to help raise money for Martinez' funeral. Hundreds of people from the community gathered at the local taco stand to help support the Martinez family in their most time of need. By the end of the weekend, the family had raised enough money to cover most of the funeral costs, but just a little more was needed.

To help, an account was set up at First National Bank, under the name Monica, and the family is still accepting donations. The account number is 443338199.

Greg Martinez' funeral will be held at the Trevino Funeral Home on Wednesday, with an Internment to follow at Memory Gardens.
