On Oct. 9 of this year Nonprofit organization “Through the Heart” brought awareness to pregnancy and infant loss to the surrounding area. Since 1988, pregnancy and infant loss awareness month has been recognized in October but most people are still unaware of the magnitude of the issue.

The mission of Through the Heart is to educate and support people experiencing a pregnancy loss either directly or indirectly. It can be a difficult thing for most people to talk about as well as a hard topic to provide the proper support for.

The groups website provides information as well as educational materials for the public and currently the group has an initiative underway. On Fridays during the month of October the group encourages everyone to wear blue and/or pink to help bring awareness to this issue.

In addition to the initiative on Wednesday the group held a “Wave of Light” ceremony in which residents were asked to light a candle at 7 p.m. and let it burn for one hour.

The idea behind the Wave of Light is an international event in which there will be continuous light spanning the globe for a 24 hour period. The intent of the event is to honor and remember the children who die during pregnancy or only shortly after birth.
