On Oct. 23 Texas A&M University Kingsville held its annual Tejano Symposium as well as a luncheon banquet and panel discussion. The panel discussion was held at 2 P.M. in Little Theatre.
The Symposium itself was held in the Bailey Art Gallery next to Manning Hall located on the Eastern side of the campus. Bailey Art Gallery regularly displays the works of students and faculty and is open during normal campus hours.
As a part of the symposium Dr. Hector P. Garcia was honored for his legacy in the civil rights movement and honoring author and alumnus Dr. Ignacio Garcia with the Tejano Service and Heritage Award. Dr. Ignacio Garcia is the premier biographer on Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
Keeping with the theme of the symposium Carne Guisada with the traditional trimmings was served as a part of the banquet portion of the days festivities. In addition the documentary film "Man of the People - Hecrot P. Garcia" made its South Texas debut as a part of the event.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia's daughter Cecilia and his great niece Barbara Canales were on hand for the occasion. At the awards banquet the panel discussion retired professor from A&M corpus Christi Dr. Patrick Carroll joined Dr. Ignacio Garcia as well as Cecilia Garcia on the panel as Adriana Garza Flores moderated.
