On SUnday Oct. 26 Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 96th Church Anniversary and Homecoming services. The services were overseen by Pastor Rev. Herman L. Barnes and and the Congregation of Robstown Texas.
In November of 1918 Brother Riley M. Mays and 11 family members chartered and organized what was the first black church, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. The Church itself was organized in Mays own home and was also the first black school, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary.
Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church prospered with increased membership under the Pastoral leadership of 15 ministers since its creation. Rev. BT Cherry served as Pastor for 40 years until his death, and Rev. Herman L. Barnes has humbly served as Pastor since Sept. 21 2005.
The Rev. G.O. Wyatt and congregation, Palestine Baptist Church of Victoria Texas were on hand as special guests for the days services.
