CORPUS CHRISTI – Turns out the third time wasn’t the charm for the Calallen girls basketball team.
Alice made sure of that, holding off the Wildcats 40-32 Friday night at Calallen High School. It was the Lady Coyotes’ third win of the season over Calallen.
The Wildcats certainly made them work for it, however. Alice led by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter and went up 38-25 on Nadia Canales’ jumper with under four minutes to play. A Kaylie Gutierrez 3-pointer cut the deficit to 10 and Hailey Mata eventually brought the score to 38-30 with 55 seconds to go.
Calallen got a steal of the ensuing inbounds and turned it into an easy layup for Mata, bringing the Wildcats within six with 50 seconds remaining. The Lady Coyotes were able to break the press, however, and sealed the victory on Alex Garcia’s wide-open score underneath the basket.
“I was expecting to come over here and outperform them,” Alice coach Amanda Gonzalez said. “Of course it’s not the margin that I wanted it to be, but it’s a win.”
Christian Myers led the Lady Coyotes with 12 points. Garcia and Janelle Castillo each added eight.
Alice scored the first 10 points of the game before Danielle Baca knocked down a shot from beyond the arc. Baca had a game-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Calallen went 7 of 33 (21 percent) from long range.
The Lady Coyotes moved to 10-16 overall on the season and 3-7 in District 30-5A.
