Arturo Garcia Salas, 68, went home to his heavenly father and youngest son Sammy on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. He was born in Robstown, Texas on August 13, 1946 to Gilberto Cortez and Longina Perez Martinez. He was later raised by Isabel and Natividad Salas.
Arturo was a devoted husband to his wife Hilda Barrera Salas for 45 years. Throughout their marriage he worked tirelessly to provide for her and their two sons, Arturo and Sammy. His whole world revolved around being the best possible husband and father. He led his family by example as a man of God, strong in his faith. He also taught his sons the value of hard work, giving 33 years of service to the Nueces County Drainage District and countless nights and weekends working at his in-laws family owned business, Barrera’s Fried Chicken.
Arturo will be remembered as a man with a heart of gold, never meeting a stranger, his love of music, loved by all who knew him and the man who lived to see his proudest moment, the day he became a grandfather to his twin grandsons Carlos and Samuel Salas.
Arturo is survived by his wife, Hilda Barrera Salas; son Arturo (Veronica) Salas; grandsons, Carlos and Samuel Salas; sisters, Mary Moen of Pineville, North Carolina, Julie (Jesus) Rodriguez of Marble Falls, Texas, Mary (Manuel) Cano and Carmen Cortez both of Kingsville, Texas; Brothers, Albert Martinez of Kingsland, Texas, Charlie Cortez of Austin, Texas, and Johnny and Leeroy Cortez both of Kingsville, Texas, Mother In-Law, Azucena Barrera and Brother In-Law, Rene (Velma) Barrera of Robstown, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his son, Sammy Salas; parents, Isabel and Natividad Salas, Gilberto Cortez, Longina Perez Martinez; and father in-law, Gregorio Barrera.
A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Ramon Funeral Home in Robstown, Texas with a funeral mass being celebrated at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Robstown, Texas. Entombment will follow to Memorial Park Mausoleum in Robstown, Texas.
