Tuloso-Midway senior Mason Hellums first said he would continue his baseball career after high school at Rice University in Houston.

He finally made it official last week. The Warriors’ baseball star signed a national letter of intent with the college baseball powerhouse last Thursday.

While he hasn’t pitch this season because of arm issues, he was still a key contributor this season. He is the Warriors’ starting right fielder and is fifth on T-M’s batting order.

Hellums is a four-year varsity player at Tuloso-Midway. He first made a commitment to Rice before last season. Hellums has earned all-district honors three-straight seasons. In 2014, he had an ERA of 1.73 and was 6-5 on the mound.

“It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since the day I committed,” Hellums said. “It’s every kid’s dream. The biggest decision is how good they are academically, and graduating from there will give me a great opportunity in life. Then being a national powerhouse in baseball doesn’t hurt either.”
