Over the weekend the students of Tuloso-Midway competed in the Region IV 5A One Act Play Competition and for the first time since the 1970’s have advanced to state competition. The students and directors now find themselves in both excitement and anticipation of the competition and have now been spending their time preparing.
The rehearsals started for these students back in January of this year. Competitions for UIL One Act started in March and the students now find themselves making their way to Austin where they will compete on May 27th at the Bass performance hall which is located on the University of Texas campus.
“This production has been one of the most rewarding and difficult productions I have ever worked on,” said director Wendy Pratt. Pratt notes that the year has been a difficult one for her following the passing of her father just a few short months ago.
“His passing has had a profound impact on everything I do including directing this play,” said Pratt. “The show has been a healing process for me, and in the words of Catherine, has taught me that “Time was kind after all.””
The school notes that this accomplishment would not have been possible without the help of Curtis Ashby for his production work and technical direction. In addition they note that the Tuloso-Midway ISD administration and staff, Dr. Sue Nelson, and Mr. Rodney Sumner have been beyond supportive in making this accomplishment possible for Drama and Arts department.
The teachers of Tuloso-Midway also played a large role in making this accomplishment possible in the ways of helping students catch up on their work and even tutoring them to ensure they could stay in the show. Being a UIL competition each student must remain academically eligible to participate in the performance of the One Act Play.
In addition Tuloso-Midway also had students competing in the UIL Region contests over the weekend of April 25th. In addition to the One Act Play qualifying for State the following students competed in various events.
