Grab the bait and get ready to fish for a cause. Del Mar College and LNV Inc., a local engineering, architecture and contracting company, are partnering to host the second annual “Stringers for Scholarships” fishing tournament July 10-11 to raise funds for student scholarships.
“This is a very laid back tournament that’s all about having fun and raising money for scholarships,” said Sally Reigle, CFRE and Del Mar College development coordinator with the College’s Office of Development and Foundation. “Last year was our first year, and we had 40 teams. We were thrilled with that. We have a goal of 50 teams this year, so come on out and have fun for a good cause.”
The two-day event opens with a Captain’s Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Marker 37 (13317 South Padre Island Drive) with free food, drinks and a sneak peek at raffle items. At least one team member must attend this event to pick up packets with tournament rules, goodie bags and other items.
Fishing runs from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Angler weigh-in is between 2 and 4 p.m. Contestants must be in line by 4 p.m. to get their fish weighed.
Individual awards for first, second and third place will be given for the following categories: heaviest single speckled trout, heaviest single redfish and heaviest flounder with gift cards for $250, $100 and $50 for each place in all three categories. A single team award for $400 will be given for the heaviest stringer not to exceed two trout, one redfish and one flounder.
The competition also includes side pot payouts at $75 per entry/individual with first place being half of the pot and the other half going to Del Mar College scholarships. Categories include heaviest speckled trout, heaviest redfish and heaviest flounder.
“LNV Inc., who partners with us on the tournament, actually ran this event originally as their employee fishing tournament until last year. The company decided they wanted to give something to the community, so they gave us their fishing tournament,” Reigle said. “They’ve also been instrumental in getting items for the raffle we have and securing teams.”
Individual entry is $100 with a discount for DMC students and employees. Sponsorships are also available with a one-team entry (up to four anglers), including the Salty Sponsor for $2,500, the Spinner Sponsor for $1,500 and the Sand Dune Sponsor for $1,000, along with other benefits.
Registration runs through Friday, July 3. To access tournament rules, an entry form in PDF format and other information, visit www.delmar.edu/foundation and click the “Stringers for Scholarships” button.
If mailing the entry form and payment, checks should be made payable to “Del Mar College Foundation” and addressed to Del Mar College Foundation, Inc., 101 Baldwin Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78404-3897. The form can also be faxed to 361-698-1257. Credit card payments can be made by calling Reigle at 361-698-1033.
