The road to the state baseball tournament is going through San Antonio for Class 5A’s No. 2-ranked Calallen Wildcats.

Calallen (30-3) is playing a best-of-three playoff series against Georgetown in San Antonio over three days beginning Thursday.

Game 1 of the Region IV-5A finals series is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at San Antonio’s Blossom Athletic Center. Game 2 is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at V.J. Keefe Stadium at St. Mary’s University. If needed, Game 3 is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Blossom Athletic Center.

The Wildcats made the regional semifinals look pretty easy, sweeping San Antonio Alamo Heights in back-to-back games. They won the first game of the best-of-three series in San Antonio Thursday night before closing things out close to home at Tuloso-Midway High School with a 2-0 shutout victory.

Game 2 ended up being a pitchers’ duel between Calallen’s Kyle Hill and Alamo Heights’ Forrest Whitley. Hill, a big right-handed senior, is a Baylor commit, while Whitley, a junior, is verbally committed to Florida State. With their two aces on the mound, they combined with 24 strikeouts.

Hill won the contest, surrounding only two infield hits through seven innings of work. In Game 1, Calallen pitcher Dylan Duarte limited Alamo Heights to six hits.

Calallen was able to scatter five hits of Whitley. Brandon Broughton and Nathan Rabe each had doubles for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats did their damage in the fourth inning, scoring two runs in the frame.
