The City of Corpus Christi Mayor’s 4th of July Big Bang Celebration Committee is honored to announce this year’s essay contest winners.

1st Place: Jermi Shamblin, 5th grader, J.A. Garcia Elementary

2nd Place: Rebecca Canales, 4th grader, Luther Jones Elementary

3rd Place: Andrea Radish, 4th grader, Club Estates Elementary

Jermi Shamblin will ride in the Mayor’s 4th of July Parade and will receive a Kindle Fire HD provided by the Corpus Christi Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

“I don’t even know how to explain it, but I’m really excited to have won.” Jermi said. “I think the 4th of July holiday is pretty fun and I celebrate it a lot with family. We barbeque and watch the fireworks.”

Coastal Bend students in grades 4th through 8th competed in this year’s essay contest. They were asked to write about what the 4th of July meant to them. The three top place finishers will be introduced to the public at the July 14th City Council meeting. The second and third place winners will receive a certificate signed by Mayor Nelda Martinez.
