The Valero Energy, Coastal Bend Community Foundation and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Regional Science Fair will be held Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, in the American Bank Center, first floor exhibit halls. This year’s event title sponsors are Valero Energy, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and Del Mar College is the event’s silver title sponsor. The 28th annual regional Science Fair is affiliated with the Texas state science fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Students will check in their science display boards on Friday, Feb. 26, from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and judges will evaluate display boards from more than 500 K-12th grade students representing 11 counties around South Texas on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The public viewing of exhibits will be held on Saturday from 6:30-7 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony from 7-8 p.m.

To qualify for this regional-level fair, the students have already advanced as award winners at their school and/or district fairs.  Students from K-12 public, private, and charter schools within the Coastal Bend will compete to win a $1,000 “Best in Show” – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Tuition Award.  Junior and senior division winners can advance to the state science fair, Texas State Science & Engineering Fair in San Antonio, Texas, from Thursday, March 31, through Sunday, April 2.  Additionally, the top 10 percent of junior division winners have the opportunity to compete in Broadcom MASTERS, the national middle school science and engineering fair; and the two top senior division projects will advance as finalists to the Intel (ISEF) in Phoenix, Ariz., from Thursday, Oct. 27, through Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Projects in grades K-5 are grouped into one of two scientific divisions, physical science or life/health science.  Projects in grades 6-12 can be entered in 20 different categories including Animal Science, Behavioral and Social Science, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry-Biochemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Bioengineering, Environmental Management and Environmental Sciences, Medicine and Health, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, and Plant Sciences.
