The Corpus Christi Public Library system is celebrating our Centennial starting with a visit by former First Lady of Texas and the United States Laura Bush to the La Ratama Central Library on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
The Centennial Celebration will have activities in all six public libraries. We will have events from Oct. 4 to Dec. 14. Check online at www.cclibraries.com for a complete listing of all the activities, times and location addresses.
The Northwest Branch Library will be having our grand unveiling of the "Ice Age Mural" by Dinah Bowman and the left front arm (I didn't know until recently that the front two 'legs' of mammals are considered arms) of a Colombian Mammoth that was discovered in the Bluntzer area. Both exhibits will be housed in the children's area at the Northwest Branch Library.
Be sure and check out the display cabinets for new bones and rocks that have been added. Our grand unveiling will be Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. Please come and enjoy the new exhibits and stay for a very lively discussion on the "Ice Age" by geologist Owen Hopkins.
If you haven't had the opportunity to hear Owen talk, you will be amazed at the fun information that you will learn. We have a limited number of Ice Age bone fragments to give to the children attending. Hold and take something home with you that is around 13,000 years old.
You are going to be amazed at the variety of animals that roamed the Nueces River Basin area. Just looking at the "Ice Age Mural" will astound you. I had no idea we had lions, camelops (think camel) and glyptons (think giant armadillo) walking in our area.
Standing next to the Colombian Mammoth exhibit makes me feel really short. I don't think the Mammoth would have noticed if they had stepped on me.
Remember to come help celebrate the Corpus Christi Public Library System Centennial with us on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m.
Come join us at our family storytimes on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. We also have a baby/toddler storytime on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. and P.J. storytime Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
I will be starting a four week basic sign language class for children ages 6 and above on Monday 5 p.m. This class is free and open to all children.
