Local funeral homes agree that the key to success is treating all families like they are your family. Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman, Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman and Fisher Funeral Home in Denison were named the top funeral homes in Texoma by Best of Texoma voters.
“When it comes to choosing a funeral home, people want to consider quality of services, professionalism of staff, cost, reputation of the funeral home in the community and location of the funeral home,” Waldo Vice President Joel Bedgood said.
Candy Fisher of Fisher Funeral Home agreed that people should feel comfortable with the funeral home they choose for their family member’s arrangements.
“Talk to your family members beforehand about death arrangements,” she said. “It’s a conversation that needs to be had. Sometimes we forget some of the information that needs to be included on the death certificate when we are going through a lot emotionally. We give an information booklet ahead of time.”
Charles Dannel of Dannel Funeral Home agreed that prearranging can save families a lot of stress.
“People don’t really know if you care until they need to know that you care,” he said. “Make sure they are the type of people you want to take care of mom or dad. Make sure it’s people you trust. That’s a sure way to know if you want to entrust them with their care.”
Fisher also said that it is important for families to know where their loved ones want to be buried and other arrangement preferences.
“We are reasonably priced,” she said. “We take good care of families. We treat people the way we would want to be treated. We treat deceased with respect, as well as family. If we did not, we would not get returning families.”
The first thing Dannel said people should do when they are trying to figure out which funeral home is right for their family is visit the funeral home.
“Funeral homes main form of advertisement is word of mouth, so we try to make sure that every service goes as perfectly as possible,” he said. “We only have one shot at these services. We want to exceed their expectations.”
That goal of exceeding expectations is why, Dannel believes that Dannel Funeral Home has been in Sherman for more than 100 years.
“We are fortunate to be a part of this community and to serve people of Texoma,” he said. “We look forward to another 100 years of serving the people of this area.”
Waldo’s 80-year presence in Texoma, Bedgood said, can be attributed to how the funeral home treats its clients.
“We are committed to treating people with dignity,” he said. “We are committed to do that and continuing to do that.”
