Dear District Assignment Appeals Committee:
I am writing to respectfully urge you to rule in favor of Calallen ISD’s appeal of their UIL district placement into District 29, a placement that would create an extreme travel hardship.
I have communicated with Calallen ISD officials to discuss the problems the new changes present as well as possible solutions, and I would like to echo their concerns. School officials fear the change will greatly increase transportation costs by forcing the district to regularly transport students to cities 2 to 3 hours away for UIL activities. The excessive travel time will mean less time in classrooms for students, creates added safety risks, and places a financial burden on families.
The students of Calallen ISD deserve the best opportunity available to succeed in school, and the demands of balancing academics with athletics are daunting at the very least. We fear that this move to District 29 will unnecessarily make it even more difficult for student atheletes and others involved.
For the above reasons, I respectfully ask that you approve Calallen ISD’s appeal for placement into District 30, which is more conducive to the safety and success of the students. I look forward to working with you on this issue and I thank you in advance for your consideration.
State Representative, District 34
