A benefit dance is scheduled for Friday, March 18 from 8:00 PM to midnight in Orange Grove. The dance is sponsored by the Jim Wells County 4-H and the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Office. The Rifle Club, located next to the Orange Grove High School football stadium at 400 S. Harrod Street, has donated their space for the event. Tickets at the door are $10.00 and pre-sale tickets are $7.00 and are available from 4-H members in Orange Grove or the Agrilife Extension office at the Jim Wells County Courthouse in Alice.
Eli's fund is a memorial to Lance Corporal Colton Rusk and his service dog, Eli. Rusk was killed in action by a sniper's bullet in Afghanistan on December 6, 2010. Eli was deemed unworkable by the US Military and Rusk's family in Orange Grove was allowed to adopt him. Eli is the second dog in US history to allowed this honor. Eli's veterinary care is provided by the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine which has pledged to cover all of his health expenses for the rest of his life. Eli's fund was set up to help with costs for the care of retired military service animals who have been adopted into post military service or adopted by former handlers.
Every year the Texas 4-H decides on a charity fund to support. For the 2015-2016 school year the 4-H has approved the proposal by District 12 President David Gebert to sponsor Eli's Fund. The total amount that the Texas 4-H hopes to raise is $15,000 with District 12 given a goal of $1,500 to raise. However, due to the fact that Rusk was a resident of Jim Wells County as well as Eli and the Rusk family residing in Orange Grove, the Jim Wells County 4-H has set their own goal to surpass the district goal. Presently they have already collected $700.00 and are looking to add more with the dance on Friday. Proceeds from admission, pre-sale ticket sales and concessions to be sold at the dance will all go towards Eli's Fund.
