In a school board meeting held on Monday, the Calallen ISD discussed many items concerning the next school year. One of the most important items on the agenda was teacher salaries.
Calallen, like several other school districts, try to make sure that they incorporate an annual raise for teachers into the budget for the next year. School District Director of Finance Edith George stated that due to tax rates and the economic climate that state funding for the school district is expected to go down by $1 million. However with some of the other factors that are affecting the budget, the actual budget shortfall felt affecting the district may be considerably less.
One of the major variables will be the taxes paid by industrial businesses that fall under Texas State Tax Code 313. The taxes that will be paid by these businesses help to sustain the district's budget.
As part of her presentation to the school board, George displayed the figures that she has already worked up regarding annual teacher salary raises. George showed the board members the figures on teacher to student ratios, salaries for first year to 30 year teachers, comparative rates for other districts in the area and the cost of raising salaries by different percentages up to four percent. After George finished, District Superintendent Dr. Arturo Almendarez spoke on behalf of teachers and stated the importance of paying them what they are worth.
“I think the pay increase is warranted by our staff," he said.
After convening for a closed session, the board members agreed that while the rest of the budget was not yet decided, the raises were a priority and needed to be the most important item on the budget for the next school year. The raises were unanimously approved among other included budgetary items that were discussed in closed session.
Other agenda items included approvals for open bids contracts for work that may be done by contractors for the district. Blair McDavid, Director of Procurement and Risk Management, called for more contractors to be added to the list of approved vendors for the district to both lower downtime and increase savings by having more competition among bidders. McDavid's proposals were approved.
