A two vehicle collision resulted in traffic being reduced to one lane just east of Orange Grove early Friday evening. The accident occurred at approximately 6:40 PM at the intersection of eastbound FM 624 and E Soyars Avenue near the Orange Grove city limits.
According to Trooper Jordan Larrimore, the accident occurred when the driver of a 1984 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup pulled over to the shoulder to in order to give himself a wider area to make the left turn onto E. Soyars Ave. The driver of the pickup then proceeded to turn left without checking that the road behind him was clear. A 2015 Dodge Caravan traveling east on 624 was sideswiped by the pickup disabling it in the roadway and sending the minivan into a field on the north side of the road.
“There were three children and two adults in the van. They were sent to the hospital, most likely Christus Spohn in Alice just to get checked out,” said Larrimore. The pickup only had the driver who remained on the scene.
The driver of the truck stated that he had just bought the truck and told troopers that the truck had a wide turn radius and that was the reason he had moved to the shoulder on the right to make the lefthand turn onto Soyars.
The driver of the truck was cited for Turning when unsafe and driving without insurance.
