The Texas Department of Agriculture awarded several school districts with grants as part of the 2016 National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grants.

Four of the school districts were in the South Texas area, Benavides ISD, San Diego ISD, Freer ISD and Agua Dulce ISD.

Benavides Secondary and Elementary Schools received equipment such as coolers, hot/cold mobile or stationary serving lines for a total cost of $60,900.

San Diego High School got a grant for $5,000 that went towards a walk-in refrigerator.

Freer Junior High got two hot/cold food carts at $11,334 each.

Agua Dulce ISD's central kitchen received a total of $27,000 for coolers, hot/cold mobile carts and the serving line.

According to officials, the grants are issued every year and without the grant the district would have to purchase the money on their own.

The equipment comes just weeks away from the upcoming school year.
