The Corpus Christi Public Libraries closed Harte Library on a temporary basis beginning today. After research, it was determined several upholstered chairs in the library had parasites specifically bed bugs. In order to correct the pest problem, the library proactively closed to both the public and the Flour Bluff School District while a plan of action and necessary steps are taken. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bed bugs do not transmit disease but are a re-occurring problem worldwide causing property loss, expense and inconvenience.
The City is working proactively with the school district, the city-county health district and local pest professionals to quickly address the problem. Due to the nature of a public library any visitor could have been a carrier for the parasites and finding the source is almost impossible. “We are closing temporarily to begin implementing pest control treatment as soon as possible,” said Laura Garcia, Libraries Director. “Once the facility has been further evaluated and treatment has been completed the library will reopen,” added Garcia.
