An Alice man took a joyride in a stolen vehicle that ended with a trip to the hospital.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday, a Jim Wells County deputy attempted to make contact with Luis Trigo III, who had been reported for attempting to steal the vehicle.

Instead of stopping for the deputy, Trigo ensued a chase as several law enforcement officers from JWC Sheriff's Department, Alice Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) pursued him. At one time, there were about 20 units trying to stop Trigo.

According to officials, Trigo was traveling east on Highway 44 with speeds up to 85 miles an hour.

Trigo was between Banquete and Agua Dulce on Highway 44 when he crashed and rolled several times near Farm-to-Market 45.

He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, officials said.

As of Thursday at 4 p.m., Trigo had not been arrested, due to his medical condition. The case is under investigation and a warrant has been issued.
