SAN DIEGO - A San Diego Police Officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay Friday after shooting a 34-year-old suspect in the leg.
Officer Jonathan Melendez responded to a family disturbance call on the 400 block of West Nickerson Street at approximately 1:30 a.m.
According to San Diego Police Chief Rogelio Rodriguez, Fred Bueno had assaulted several people and also had a knife when the officer made contact with him.
According to law enforcement officials, Bueno went at the officer with the knife before Melendez shot him.
Details about the case are unavailable until the Texas Rangers conducted their investigation. Officer Melendez has been with the force for two years.
Bueno was taken to a Corpus Christi Hospital via Halo Flight before being transported to the Duval County jail.
At this time Bueno is only charged with two counts of assault and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon family member.
At this time Bueno has no bond.
