More than 200,000 nationwide entries were made in the Blockbuster Bucket List Sweepstakes sponsored by Alice Echo-News Journal and Alice Chevrolet.
Thomas Mansilla of Alice was randomly selected out of those entries as the winner. He chose to take the New Year's Eve in Las Vegas trip.
"It's like the lotto. You can't win if you don't play," Mansilla said. "I knew the odds were against me."
All Mansilla did was submit an entry through a link on the AENJ website for his big chance. Mansilla submitted two entries for the trip before the contest was over.
"I was reading an article online when the ad for the contest popped up," he said. "I said let's try and see if I win. There's no harm in trying."
When Mansilla went online he chose the Las Vegas trip out of the 10 available prizes.
"I decided on the trip because I had been to Las Vegas once, but I couldn't gamble cause of my age," Mansilla stated. "I was about 10 or 11 when I went. When I saw the list of prizes I could enter for I decided, now I'm old enough and can actually have some fun while I'm there."
There were 10 prizes available to chose from. Prizes were NCAA Football, Super Bowl LIII, Daytona 500, Red Sox baseball, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Hawaii vacation, 2019 Master's Tournament, SXSW Music Festival in Austin or $10,000 in cash.
Mansilla is taking a friend on the trip with him. Besides gambling, he plans to do some sightseeing.
