For the Van Alstyne Leader

Two scouting troops got a budget boon Monday in the form of $850 checks from the Mantua Mason Lodge No. 209 in Van Alstyne.

Accepting the honors were David Christman, cub scoutmaster of Howe’s Pack No. 45, and Les Cain, community chair of Van Alstyne’s Troop 44.

Freeman Bob Douglas presented the troop leaders with the checks at the lodge prior to their regular monthly meeting.

Cain said that the donations would be “used to directly benefit the boys in the programs,” such as to provide travel costs to help with causes. The scout leaders said other leaders will make the final decisions together.

Locally, both scout troops are active in civic activities, such as presenting the flags in the October Wreaths Across America ceremony, at the July 4th celebration, and for both the Fall der All and Christmas parades.

At monthly meetings, held on the second Monday monthly, the Masons serve dinner at 6:30 p.m., making the evening a family event.Their meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. Masons visiting from other lodges and candidates to join are always welcome, said Zach Herring.
