Local restaurateur Manny Gutierrez, has endured his share of trials and tribulations being in the restaurant business for over 28 years.
Gutierrez, first started working in restaurants in Robstown at the La Estrellita and La Famila; close to 30years ago.
"I'm grateful for my experiences in small family run restaurants-it toughened me up, but nothing really prepares you for being a restaurant owner. It's not for the weak," Gutierrez said.
He then worked for Johnny Carinos in Corpus Christi for many years as the Catering Coordinator. Later he decided to go out on his own and started a small independent catering business.
"In the early days we would rent out kitchens and started catering local doctor offices for luncheons and refineries and it grew from there," he said.
Since then he has owned and operated three different restaurants. First, was a diner in Refugio where he endured a head-on collision driving to Refugio from Corpus, that almost took his life. Then, Gordo’s that closed in November due to a vehicle crashing into the restaurant. Now, Gordo’s American Eats -where he recently relocated to on Old Robstown Road, in the industrial area of Corpus Christi.
The Gutierrez family has endured multiple set backs, but continues to push through and serve comfort food in an uncomfortable world, as Gutierrez would say when describing the food in his restaurant.
"I'm a father and husband first and foremost, and I'm blessed to have the opportunity to spend my work-day with my wife and daughter," Guiterrez said. "We have worked as a family to build the restaurant and after this last move to Old Robstown Road, we have decided to move to the neighborhood, closer to restaurant and have been welcomed with open arms."
The restaurant serves and caters home cooked food and recently extended their hours in the evenings to accommodate his neighbors and dinner crowd.
